CTF applauds Saskatchewan's opposition to Kyoto

Author: David Maclean 2002/10/28
REGINA: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is applauding the Saskatchewan government's vocal opposition to the costly Kyoto protocol. In a news conference yesterday, Minister Lautermilch clearly stated the province's opposition to the deal, and asserted the province's jurisdictional rights over resources.

"The Saskatchewan government is beginning to see the light on Kyoto," said CTF Saskatchewan Director David MacLean. "We're pleased the government is finally seeing Kyoto for what it really is - a costly and job-killing international agreement that will do little for the environment and stifle Saskatchewan's economy."

"We're hopeful that this government does more than speak out - Saskatchewan must take an active leadership role among the provinces in an effort to stop the federal government's ratification of the Protocol," added MacLean.

CTF calls for Calvert to sign Kyoto referendum petition
News of the province's breaking silence on Kyoto is timely for CTF supporters. Two weeks ago the CTF began circulating a petition demanding the federal government hold a national referendum prior to ratification.

"We will formally invite the Premier to join thousands of other Saskatchewan residents who have registered their opposition to Kyoto and signed our petition," said MacLean. "If Kyoto is so important to Prime Minister Chretien, surely it's important enough to let the people decide."

CTF to unveil a study documenting dramatic economic impacts of Kyoto
Next week, the CTF will unveil a contracted study by University of Guelph economist Ross McKitrick, Ph.D, estimating the financial impact of Kyoto on the average Canadian household.
